Examining God’s Word
“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying,
I am the light of the world:
he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness,
but shall have the light of life.”
John 8:12
Evaluating Our Garden
We spend a lot of time in our homes. They’re the places we retreat, rest, refuel, and rejuvenate. At times, they can be peaceful places to live and, at other times, restless places of turmoil. It all depends on our environments and the paths we choose to walk.
Not all homes are conducive to growth. Some are full of love and light. Others are filled with hate and darkness. Some nurture, and others hinder, our walk with God and others.
Sure, no one’s home is perfect, but they should be bright places where we can walk peacefully in our faith. Darkness should not feel welcomed in a home where the light of Jesus takes up residence.
Experiencing Seasons
Darkness depresses me and I dislike it in my home. I don’t like when the atmosphere is negative, or it’s overcast and dark in the house. It brings me down emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and physically. It drains my energy and motivation.
On the other hand, a bright, positive and well-lit home renews me. My heart lifts when I’m walking the right spiritual path, my family is at peace and I can raise the blinds to let the sunshine in or turn on the lamps and light candles to make an overcast day cozier. When my home is filled with the sun and the light of God’s Son, walking through life is more pleasant.
Embracing Solace
Dark homes aren’t cozy or comfortable. They’re distressing. Instead of walking in the light, we may feel like running away. We’re not meant to walk on egg shells in our homes and struggle in the darkness of this world. God wants us to walk in the solace and security of His light.
Enjoying Simplicity
Our homes shouldn’t trip us up with the obstacles and consequences of the darkness of evil. When we follow the light of Jesus, our path should be clear and less complicated.
Employing Solutions
God’s Word teaches us that we can’t walk in darkness and light at the same time. Evil deeds cannot dwell with Godly deeds. One will outshine the other:
“And this is the condemnation,
that light is come into the world,
and men loved darkness rather than light,
because their deeds were evil.
For every one that doeth evil hateth the light,
neither cometh to the light,
lest his deeds should be reproved.
But he that doeth truth cometh to the light,
that his deeds may be made manifest,
that they are wrought in God.”
John 3:19-21
We can’t say we are walking in the light and following Jesus and have hate in our hearts and homes.
“He that saith he is in the light,
and hateth his brother,
is in darkness even until now.
He that loveth his brother
abideth in the light,
and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
But he that hateth his brother
is in darkness, and walketh in darkness,
and knoweth not whither he goeth,
because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.”
1 John 2:9-11
When we spend time shining God’s light in our homes, darkness has to vacate. This makes our lives much more pleasant and our paths easier to walk.
