Spending Time Sharing the Light

“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying,
I am the light of the world:
he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness,
but shall have the light of life.”
John 8:12

Ah, spring, the season that brightens our souls and chases away the dark, gray days of our winter’s rest. As the sunny days of spring begin to appear, they lure us from our winter slumber to the thresholds of our domains. The sun brightens our hearts and homes and makes me want to put on my flip-flops and join others outside.

Our spiritual lives yearn for the light of Jesus just like our physical bodies crave the sun. And, sometimes, when life gets dreary, and gets us down, we need others to share that light with us. We all need encouragement at times, to get out in the sun and to turn our focus to the light of Jesus.

It’s not easy to stroll toward the light when our hearts are overwhelmed with the darkness around us and we’re in deep despair. It’s much easier to see the light when we have someone walking with us through the darkness we face and shining a light on the path ahead.

I tend to withdraw from the world when it gets too dark around me; whether it’s darkness I harbor in my heart about personal situations, or the darkness I see in others’ attitudes and actions. My spirit sinks. Darkness is not a nice place to stay. To thrive, I have to I find my way back to the light.

Joining others in casual conversation, prayer, Bible Study, a cup of tea at a coffee shop, a walk at the beach or park, sitting on the porch, or taking a nature walk to see spring’s budding newness, can shine light onto a dark day.

There is something beautifully inviting about spending a few unhurried moments walking in the sun. Sharing time with a loved one can brighten our spirits and bring a sense of comfort.

Walking is sweet in its simplicity. It costs nothing, and can be done anywhere, at any time. Walking in the light, spiritually or physically, promotes a healthy heart.

It’s a lovely time of year to get out and experience beautiful moments. It’s also a great time to reach out to others and invite them to:

  • Get together with you
  • Meet somewhere pleasant
  • Have tea on the porch
  • Go for a picnic
  • Take a walk on a new path
  • Visit a pretty garden
  • Have a casual Bible study discussion
  • Deliver flowers to those who are shut in
  • Make cards and write notes of encouragement
  • Pray for, or with, someone who is living in a dark situation
  • Join you in spreading love, kindness, and smiles to others

It doesn’t take a lot of time to shine the light in someone else’s world. We can make it fun, and be creative. It can brighten our day and bring light to someone who may be struggling in the darkness of this world.

Let’s stop hibernating at home and hiding behind social media platforms. Let’s open our hearts and blinds, put on our flip-flops, and get outside to shine the light of Jesus in our circles of influence. A walk in the Light would do us all a world of good.

How will you join me in sharing the light of Jesus with someone this spring?

Praying for you as we grow together,
Smiles, BRC
