Examining God’s Word
“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying,
I am the light of the world:
he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness,
but shall have the light of life.”
John 8:12
Evaluating Our Garden
Life depends on light. Most plants don’t do well in the dark. They need light—directly or indirectly—a little every day to survive and thrive. We need light too. We need the warm rays of the sun on our face and “the light of life” in our souls.
It’s pitiful to watch a plant or a person whither in a dark corner, as if their existence doesn’t matter. We all matter and weren’t meant to walk alone in darkness.
God’s Word gives us instructions to walk in the light. Why? Because, our spiritual and physical well-being require it.
Experiencing Seasons
Yes, I’ve let plants come to their demise in dark corners of my home. I’ve even neglected my own spiritual and physical needs only to end up wilting in weakness. I always stumble when I try to walk blindly through a responsibility, decision, relationship, or difficulty and trip over the unseen obstacles in the dark.
However, when I spend time walking in the light of God’s Son, and place my plants in reach of the sun, we both thrive. In my experience, life is safer and shines brighter when I follow the light.
Embracing Solace
When we place our faith in Jesus, spending time walking His way should follow. John 8:12 says that Jesus is the:
- Light of the World
- Light of Life
It makes sense to follow Him. He brings comfort and clarity. He illuminates our path, reveals obstacles, and brightens up our spaces. Jesus shows us where to walk, what to avoid, and how beautiful life can be.
Enjoying Simplicity
Darkness complicates our ability to see our paths clearly. It makes us vulnerable to unforeseen stumbling blocks that may lie ahead.
Let’s ponder this verse in John closely:
“But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth,
because there is no light in him.”
John 11:10
Danger lurks in the darkness and complicates our journey. Light reveals our path and prevents us from stumbling.
Employing Solutions
As followers of Christ, we can’t walk in dark ways that contradict His Word and expect to stay sound and strong in our Faith. Not only will we stumble, we may cause others to stumble as well.
So, how do we spend time walking in the Light? We begin by:
- Reading God’s Word
- Learning Jesus’ ways
- Walking like Jesus
“Let us walk honestly, as in the day;
not in rioting and drunkenness,
not in chambering and wantonness,
not in strife and envying.”
Romans 13:13
“For we are his workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus unto good works,
which God hath before ordained
that we should walk in them.”
Ephesians 2:10
“For ye were sometimes darkness,
but now are ye light in the Lord:
walk as children of light:”
Ephesians 5:8
“That ye might walk worthy of the Lord
unto all pleasing,
being fruitful in every good work,
and increasing in the knowledge of God”
Colossians 1:10
“If we say that we have fellowship with him,
and walk in darkness,
we lie, and do not the truth”
1John 1:6
Our Creator has not left us alone to walk in the darkness of this world. He has given us a light to reveal our path.
