Examining Scripture:
“Distributing to the necessity of saints;
given to hospitality.”
Romans 12:13
Evaluating Soil:
Hobbies can be extremely enjoyable and uplifting. They are even more fun when shared with someone who enjoys the same hobby. It’s such an encouraging experience when you get time to go or do something that you really desire to do and you have friends or loved ones who want to participate with you. True support is a selfless gift.
While not everyone has or wants hobbies, there are those who enjoy having something fun to do to take their minds off their work stress, private struggles, and physical setbacks. Hobbies aren’t a need, but they can meet many needs if pursued in holy, healthy, and honorable ways.
Experiencing Seasons:
This summer my husband is in the heat of accomplishing a hobby project that he has dreamed of for years. It’s costing him a lot of time, money, and plain old sweat. With a tight deadline looming, and a limited time and financial budget, it’s a big challenge and he’s under a lot of pressure to see it through, Very few people can understand his need to accomplish this goal. But, he remains determined and dedicated to finish this life-long dream.
While he is my husband, and I love him dearly, his hobby is not my hobby. I don’t know how to build a hot rod. I can’t fabricate and weld parts. I can’t do body work or paint a car. I know nothing about engines. I don’t want to. He does, and for that reason and that reason only, I’m on board.
I can think it’s crazy and maybe even impossible. That doesn’t matter. It’s fun to him, so I’m doing what I can to help him realize this dream. He has worked and sacrificed a lot in service to God, us, and others. He has earned some enjoyment from his labors and could use a boost of encouragement and motivation through the process of accomplishing this goal.
Embracing Solace:
Hobbies are a wonderful means for rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation. They are also a great way to help someone who always tries to put God and others first. Joining them in their favorite hobby can give them a boost physically and mentally when they are overwhelmed or discouraged. Dedicating our extra time to fulfill another person’s goal or desires can bring comfort to a weary friend.
Enjoying Simplicity:
It doesn’t take much to be hospitable and share a moment of downtime with someone in need. A few moments of support can lift the spirits, fuel motivation, and encourage them to keep going.
Employing Solutions:
Right now my hobby is helping my husband enjoy his hobby. It’s a joy to see his eyes light up when something he made works like it should or fits just right. Even when I’ve disagreed with the process or become frustrated under the pressure, I’ve remained committed to cheering him on.
While I can’t help him build a hot rod, I can lovingly:
- Pray for him
- Encourage him with Scripture
- Keep the house in order
- Prepare healthy food
- Provide glasses of sweet tea
- Facilitate good rest and breaks
- Cut back on my spending
- Help him with his scheduling
- Take care of event details
- Share in his excitement
- Celebrate his accomplishments
He doesn’t want or expect me to do what he does. He just needs my love, respect, and support.
