“…that the word of God be not blasphemed…
that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed,
having no evil thing to say of you.”
Titus 2:5b&8b
Without students, teaching would be a useless effort. Teachers share knowledge and instruction with students so that they can learn and apply that learning to their lives. God established this system so that the truths of His Word and other life skills could be passed down to the next generation. However, there are times when we don’t feel like learning, much less teaching. That’s when we have to re-evaluate the reasons we are to teach. God’s Word clearly states the reasons aged and younger women are to obey the instructions given in Titus 2. Let’s consider these reminders.
Unfortunately, not all younger women are willing students in the learning process, and not all older women are willing, or able, to teach them with words or deeds. It can be disheartening to a passionate teacher, who cares that their students are learning, if they aren’t grasping the lessons, or aren’t willing to put forth an effort. While Instruction and knowledge can be given, learning and application can’t be forced. Whether accepted, neglected or rejected, the responsibilities to teach and learn are still our God-given duties.
Sometimes, we have to remember and remind ourselves why teaching younger women is so important. If we don’t, we may get weary in well-doing, lose sight of our purpose, and give up on trying to make a difference, or leave them to fend for themselves or wander astray.
God says that older women are to behave as patterns of good works to teach younger women how to walk in His ways too. When we remember the reasons for this instruction, we will be less likely to turn our backs on this responsibility. When we realize that this is not just about us learning to do right, we begin to understand why we should teach others too.
Why is learning, living and teaching God’s Word so important? Some reasons are given in these Titus 2 passages:
“To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home,
good, obedient to their own husbands,
that the word of God be not blasphemed.”
Titus 2:5
“In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works:
in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,
Sound speech, that cannot be condemned;
that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed,
having no evil thing to say of you.”
Titus 2:7-8
Notice the two reasons given:
- “…that the word of God be not blasphemed.”
- “…that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed,
having no evil thing to say of you.”
Our godly behavior is more about God than it is about us. When we disobey His instructions, we give others reasons to blaspheme His Word. When we behave in non-Christian ways in front of non-believers, and give them reasons to speak evil of us, we discredit our Creator. Ouch, that hits home hard. What we do or say shines a positive or negative light on God, His Word, and us,9 as believers.
Remembering these reasons and purposing to learn and teach to bring the glory to God and share His light with the world is why this instruction was given. Let’s purpose to be patterns of good works and show the next generation the reasons we choose to fulfill this responsibility.
