“Rejoice in the LORD, ye righteous;
and give thanks at the remembrance of His holiness.”
Psalm 97:12
God is holy. That seems like such a simple statement, but in reality, it’s a deeply profound truth. I’ve read about it in Scripture and heard it proclaimed in sermons. I’ve accepted and believed it. However, as I began to focus more on this thought, I realized how often I’ve overlooked the depth of this truth, taken it for granted or given it little thought. If you told me, “God is holy.” I would join you and boldly declare, “Of course, God is Holy!” I don’t think anyone, except those who don’t believe in Him, would think anything different. Its common knowledge in most circles I know. Yet, I wondered, “Have I ever truly given thanks for God’s holiness when it was brought to my remembrance?”
My answer was simply…“No.” I recognize that God is Holy and believe it with all my heart. But, I could not recall purposefully giving thanks for His Holiness. I supposed just knowing that was enough. Yet, in Psalm 97:12 and 30:4, we’re instructed to, “…give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.”
Why should we show gratitude for God’s Holiness? Think what life would be like if God wasn’t Holy. We couldn’t trust His words, motives or character. He would be fallible just like us, and that would make Him no different. We couldn’t depend on Him, and, in most cases, wouldn’t need Him in our life.
Because God is Holy, He Keeps His Promises
Thankfully God is holy and we can trust Him and place our whole life in His hands. He will always keep His word to us and fulfill every promise in His Word.
“In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie,
promised before the world began.” Titus 1:2
Because God is Holy, We can Trust His Ways and Works
“The Lord is righteous in all His ways, and holy in all His works.” Psalm 145:17
God doesn’t get life wrong. He won’t lie, or betray us, or stab us in the back. He won’t lead us astray, let us down, abuse us, or abandon us. He won’t write us off or treat us unjustly. We never have to doubt what He says or does.
Because God is Holy, He Judges Righteously
“God reigneth over the heathen:
God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness.” Psalm 47:8
God, in His divine holiness, shows us love, patience, grace, mercy and forgiveness. He judges righteously and restores us when we stray or fall. How can we not be thankful for His kind faithfulness?
Because God is Holy, We Can Live Holy Lives
“So God created man in His own image in the image of God created He him;
male and female created He them.” Genesis 1:27
“Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.” I Peter 1:16
God created us in His image which gives us the capability to live holy. The more we learn about Him, the more thankful we become, which motivates us to live more like Him.
This thanksgiving season is a great time to start a new tradition. When we gather to show gratitude, let’s hold hands and remember His holiness while giving thanks with fresh appreciation.
“Sing unto the LORD, O ye saints of his,
and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.” Psalm 30:4
