“Honour and majesty are before him: strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.” Psalm 96:6
Fall is a fabulous time of year! It’s pleasant watching the hot summer melt into a cool, colorful vision of God’s majestic creation. I love how nature lights up in preparation for the coming celebrations of harvest and gratitude for the blessings gathered. As the leaves turn, wildflowers bloom, produce peaks, and temperatures change, I’m seeing other changes take place too—in hearts and homes. These changes are showing me how people are taking notice of the seasonal transitions, appreciating God’s beautiful displays and celebrating in creative ways.
I happily embrace this time of year and get excited about changing my home décor, wardrobe, activities, and food choices to celebrate with God, nature, and loved ones. A distinct scent of freshness comes with this season that invites me to linger outside longer and to:
- Relax
- Rejuvenate
- Refresh
- Refocus
Bright, orange pumpkins stir my smile. They’re great for recipes and decorating. I love pumpkin rolls, spice, pie, popsicles, pillows and candles. (I’m also crazy about candy corn with peanuts but I have to limit that treat to October and one “small” serving a day! It’s so yummy and I’m only human.)
Displaying for Fun
Fall is truly something to admire and appreciate and I’m always intrigued by how beautifully people decorate for this season. And yet, it’s only a small taste of creation’s natural beauty.
Decorating our homes is a fun way to acknowledge the changes taking place around us. A little fall cleaning and simple décor is refreshing. It doesn’t take a lot of time and money or require elaborate displays. If you like decorating but find you are limited in funds or skills, you can always:
- Research Ideas
- Start small
- Add a little as you can
- Use items from nature
- Simply open the windows and let in the fresh air
Everyone is different and comparing ourselves to others should be avoided. Comparisons are depleting and discouraging. God made each of us with unique tastes and talents. Emulating or envying what others do stifles our creativity and discounts how God made us. It’s fine to glean ideas from wonderful resources, but exploring our artistic abilities can be fun too.
Doing what works for us and staying within our time, space, and financial budgets is very important. If we stretch ourselves too thin trying to keep up with others, we may resent or regret our efforts and miss out on enjoying our celebrations.
Displaying for Family
Our décor should be a joy and comfort to our families too. If we only do it to impress others, our families won’t appreciate or support the efforts.
Displaying for Friends
It’s wasteful to decorate just to decorate. This investment is a great opportunity to invite guests and share the beauty with others like God displays His creativity for us.
When I learned that God planted a garden in Eden, I imagined him planning the space and planting each plant. It must have been enjoyable for Him to design and create the beautiful color patterns and intricate seasonal displays.
I think God would be pleased when we display nature’s beauty in our homes. It shows how we acknowledge Him as Creator, appreciate His creation, and admire the beauty of the season.
“Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein:
then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice.” Psalm 96:12
